Health insurance and other employee benefits often seem to be a point of contention rather than filling the purpose they were created for: to attract and keep the best employees and to create an optimistic atmosphere of productivity in the workplace. So, recast your vision and think differently about your benefits. Make benefits about more than products, deductibles and copayments. It’s time to sell the benefit of your benefits. What if you spent as much time on the execution of a benefits presentation for your employees as you do on choosing plan designs and contribution levels? There is an enormous advantage for employees when their small business employer offers a robust benefits package. Two things people care about when it comes to their benefits package is convenience and cost. Too often, employers (or those they hire to help) present benefits packages in a drudging and begrudging way. Show your employees the value so they stick around. Does your plan offer telemedicine? Explain the convenience and cost savings of virtual doctor visits compared to a trip to the doctor’s office when an employee is sick. Can your employees pick a plan with a Health Savings Account? Help your employees understand why this powerful savings-building tool is so amazing (Can you say triple-tax advantage?). Happy and healthy employees mean a more productive workplace. If your benefits package has a wellness component, encourage your employees to login and use it. A lot of wellness programs—including Allied’s Member Connection—offer rewards for participating. When your employees are taking care of themselves, they are more likely to be productive at work. Are you paying a portion of your employees’ health care premiums? Show them how much you’re investing in them outside of their routine paycheck by sharing a cost of benefits sheet. This might seem superfluous, but the point is to spend some time thinking about how to positively present benefit options. Few employees actually understand their own benefits let alone the benefits market as a whole. Showcasing a broader view of what a comprehensive benefits package really means to your employees can increase appreciation, productivity and loyalty. It was really interesting when you talked about how happy and healthy employees will mean that a workplace will be more productive. Would it be a good idea for a company to work with a consulting service when it is trying to select a healthcare provider? It seems like it would be a good idea because a consulting service would know what kind of benefits would be best for the financial situation that the business is in.

Thanks for pointing out that happy and healthy employees can allow for a more productive workplace. As you said, wellness programs can inspire employees to be more productive at work. I would imagine that any business owner would want to boost revenue. I think they should consider getting direct primary care for their employees to encourage them to work efficiently.

It got me when you discussed that happy and healthy workers result in a more productive workplace. My friend told me that he wants health insurance for his family. I should advise him to look for an insurer that provides family health insurance solutions.

It stood out to me when you talked about how it is important to show employees the value of benefits. I would think that employees would want to take advantage of benefits so that they can get healthcare coverage. As far as I know, medical care is much more affordable if you have the right employees benefit package.
